What is a BQ, and do you need one?
Boys' quarters explained: what a BQ is, how families in Abuja use it, and which Emily Ville homes include one.

"BQ" is short for boys' quarters: a small self-contained unit on the same plot as the main house. You will see it on almost every house listing in Abuja.
How people use a BQ
- Staff accommodation for a driver, cook or nanny, close by but with their own space.
- Guest rooms for visiting family who want some privacy.
- A home office or studio away from the noise of the main house.
- Rental income, where the estate rules allow it.
What to look for
Check that the BQ has its own bathroom, a separate entrance, good ventilation and its own electricity metering if you plan to let it.
BQs at Emily Ville Estate
- The 5 bedroom detached duplex comes with a two room BQ.
- The 4 bedroom semi-detached duplex and the 4 bedroom terrace each include a one bedroom BQ.
- The flats do not include a BQ.
